Shepherdess Rise Up Devotions - Psalm 40 David was Delighted to do the Will of God
In verse eight, David declared he delighted, took joy in, or desired (depending which translation being read) to do the will of God. He DELIGHTED in doing the will of God. This is another apparent characteristic of David, causing him to be a shepherd after God’s own heart (Jer. 3:15).
In Acts 13:22 we read the Lord removed Saul and He raised up David to be their king [Israel’s], of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
In John 14, Jesus shares the importance of doing the will of God when He says, in verse 15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments… and verse 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” And later in John 15, verse 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.
Verse 6 of Psalm 40 leads us to Hebrews 10:16 where we read “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,”
Loving the Lord and keeping His commandments are inextricably connected. A deep love for the Lord will result in a desire to do all the will of God (which is revealed to our thoughts and emotions?), including being good stewards of our bodies, seeking an understanding of what causes our spouse to be drawn closer to the Lord, asking the Lord what helps our children to see God’s love for them, and what will reveal to our neighbors the Love of God we have within us. After all, is this not what is most important to the Lord? He desires shepherds after His own heart, because He can trust they will do as He needs, so as to not scatter those He loves into the wilderness and darkness.
God, I pray as our love for You grows, our desire to do all your will grows with it. Lord help us to see that our obedience to You, directly affects those we love. Help us to identify, embrace and live out that which compels our spouses, children, family and friends to desire to remain close, rather than run far away because of selfishness, cruelty, and being dealt with harshly. Lord show us your will and empower us to live it out, just as David did. Lord we trust You will inscribe your will in our thoughts and emotions, compelling us to live in a way pleasing to you and in which we delight in.
