1 Corinthians 11
Dear Lord, this chapter is a challenge for me. Paul talks about coverings and hair. Then he talks about communion and the importance of examining oursleves. As I was reading, two verses came to mind...
1 Samuel 16:7 The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
Luke 11:39 Then the Lord said to him, "You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy--full of greed and wickedness!
It seems, and please forgive me if I'm wrong, You're more concerned with our hearts first being mended, becoming more generous, and being set apart for loving You and loving others (the greatest commands) than with outward appearances that may give the impression we are all those things - when we're not.
It also seems this is why the Corinthians were encouraged to examine themselves later in this chapter, before taking communion. Dear Lord, help us to examine our hearts and grow more concerned with matters on the inside rather than the impression we give on the outside. Help us better understand what it means to honor the body of Christ (Your people), and empower us to do so. Help is to fully understand the importance of communion and all that it is to You. In Jesus Mighty Name, amen.
